Career Planning: From Knowing Yourself to Your First Job

Career planning has five steps. 1) Know yourself: interests, skills and values. 2) Explore career families and find out the work, study needed, pay and demand. 3) Plan a pathway with SMART goals and a plan B. 4) Search for jobs with a CV, cover letter, digital portfolio and interview practice. 5) Make the move from school to work and keep learning, because careers change over a lifetime.

🎬 Step-by-step story

  1. Know yourself: your interests, skills and values.
  2. Explore career families and learn what each job really involves.
  3. Plan the pathway: subjects, course, internship, first job, with SMART goals.
  4. Job search kit: CV, cover letter, digital portfolio and interview.
  5. Move from school to work and keep learning all your life.
  6. Free play: tap your interests and see which career families match.

Tip: drag the 3D scene to turn it. Use two fingers to zoom.

🤔 Common doubts, cleared

What if I don't know what I like yet?

That is normal. Try clubs, projects and volunteering, and notice what makes time fly. Interests grow from experience.

Are there only a few "good" careers?

No. There are thousands of jobs in many families. Many well-paid, satisfying jobs are ones students have never heard of.

If I pick the wrong subjects, is my career over?

No. There are bridge courses, diplomas and later degrees. Plan B and other roads exist for most careers.

I have no work experience. What goes on my CV?

School projects, competitions, volunteering, part-time help in a family shop, online courses and skills all count.

Is it bad to change careers?

No. Most people do it. Skills carry over, and learning new ones keeps you employable.

Can a quiz tell me my perfect career?

No. It gives a starting point to explore. Your choices, research and experience decide.

Know yourself

Explore careers

Group jobs into career families: health, technology, business and finance, arts and media, skilled trades, public service, science and research, hospitality, agriculture and more.

For each job, find out: daily tasks, education or training needed, starting pay, working conditions, and future demand (growing, stable or shrinking). Good sources: official career websites, job ads, informational interviews (short chats with people in the job), job shadowing, volunteering and internships.

Remember international careers too: many skills (nursing, software, engineering, hospitality) are in demand in many countries, often needing a language and recognised qualifications.

Plan your pathway

Work backwards from the goal: job → qualification → course → school subjects. Paths can be university, college diploma, apprenticeship, vocational training, starting your own business, or going straight to work and studying later.

Write SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. Example: "Finish a free online spreadsheet course and build 3 sample budgets by 31 March."

Keep a plan B and check costs: fees, scholarships, loans, and whether you can earn while you learn.

Job search: CV, portfolio and interview

Try it: write a one-page CV for yourself today, with at least 3 skills and one achievement with a number (e.g. "raised ₹5,000 for a school event").

From school to work, and lifelong learning

The first job brings new habits: punctuality, professional behaviour, handling money (budget, savings, taxes), and knowing your rights at work (contract, minimum wage, safe workplace, no discrimination). Beware of fake job offers that ask you to pay a fee.

Technology keeps changing work, so people change jobs many times. Keep learning: short courses, certificates, on-the-job training. Review your plan every year.

Key formulas and definitions

Worked examples

1. Turn "I want to get better at coding" into a SMART goal.

"Complete a 20-lesson Python course and build 2 small projects to put in my portfolio by 30 June." It is specific, measurable (20 lessons, 2 projects), achievable, relevant and has a date.

2. Sort into hard and soft skills: teamwork, using spreadsheets, public speaking, first aid, time management.

Hard: using spreadsheets, first aid. Soft: teamwork, public speaking, time management.

3. Arjun wants to be a civil engineer. Work backwards to his school subjects.

Job: civil engineer → qualification: engineering degree in civil engineering → entry needs: maths, physics and chemistry at senior school plus an entrance exam → now: focus on maths and physics, and try a model-bridge project for his portfolio.

4. Improve this CV line: "Did a project on solar energy."

"Led a team of 4 to build a solar phone charger; it charged a phone 50% in 2 hours and won 2nd prize at the school science fair." It shows action, team, a number and a result.
