1. Challenges of adult life
Challenges of adult life
- Career Planning: From Knowing Yourself to Your First Job – Career planning has five steps. 1) Know yourself: interests, skills and values. 2) Explore career families and find out the work, study needed, pay and demand. 3) Plan a pathway with SMART goals and a plan B. 4) Search for jobs with a CV, cover letter, digital portfolio and interview practice. 5) Make the move from school to work and keep learning, because careers change over a lifetime.
2. Media landscape and pluralism
Media landscape and pluralism
- Media Literacy – Media literacy is the skill of reading, questioning and creating media: news, ads, videos, posts, films and games. Every media text is made by someone, for a purpose, for an audience, using forms, conventions and techniques that shape how we feel. A media-literate person checks the source, evidence, other coverage and the original before believing or sharing, notices bias and filter bubbles, and makes their own media responsibly.
3. Ethical questions in politics and society
Ethical issues in politics and society
- Bioethics: Deciding What Is Right in Biology and Medicine – Bioethics asks whether we should do what biology and medicine now let us do. It uses four principles: autonomy (respect choice), beneficence (do good), non-maleficence (do no harm) and justice (fairness). Human dignity means a person is never only a means to an end, so informed consent is needed. Therapeutic cloning may be allowed under strict rules; reproductive human cloning is banned in most countries. Start-of-life and end-of-life questions are weighed as benefits against risks and values.
4. Opportunities and challenges of social work
Social work: chances and challenges
- The Welfare State and Social Security – A welfare state is a state that protects people against the big risks of life: illness, job loss, old age, disability and poverty. It does this with a safety net made of three parts. Social insurance is paid from contributions taken from wages. Social assistance is paid from taxes to people in need. Public services such as schools and hospitals are open to everyone. Countries mix these parts in different ways: liberal (low tax, small help), conservative (help linked to your job) and social-democratic (high tax, help for all). Today welfare states face ageing populations, rising costs, global competition and many informal workers.
