Ontario Grade 9 BEM1O Building the Entrepreneurial Mindset (Grade 9, Open)
Chapters: 3
1. A. Business Leadership, Project Management, and Connections
A1 Business Leadership and Project Management · A2 Business Technologies · A3 Connections, Applications, and Careers · A4 Contributions of Entrepreneurs
- Leadership and Management: Leading People, Teams and Change – Management gets work done through planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling. Leadership inspires people to work towards a shared goal. Leaders choose a style that fits the people and the task, build qualities like communication and integrity, guide teams through their stages, plan projects with schedules, delegate well, and help people accept change.
- Data Analysis – Data analysis means turning raw data into answers. It follows a cycle: ask a question, collect data, clean it (remove errors, repeats and blanks), organise and transform it, analyse it with summaries such as mean, median, range and patterns, show it with a good chart, and draw a careful conclusion. Watch for outliers, small samples and bias, and remember that a correlation between two things does not prove that one causes the other. Data must also be stored safely and used with permission.
- Career Planning: From Knowing Yourself to Your First Job – Career planning has five steps. 1) Know yourself: interests, skills and values. 2) Explore career families and find out the work, study needed, pay and demand. 3) Plan a pathway with SMART goals and a plan B. 4) Search for jobs with a CV, cover letter, digital portfolio and interview practice. 5) Make the move from school to work and keep learning, because careers change over a lifetime.
- From Ideas to Startups: Entrepreneurship – An entrepreneur turns an idea into a business by bringing together land, labour and capital and taking the risk. New ideas replace old ways, which economists call creative destruction. Startups grow with help from investors, banks, incubators, government schemes such as Startup India and Make in India, and small firms called MSMEs. A business plan maps the idea, costs and customers. The profit and loss statement shows Sales − Costs, and the balance sheet shows Assets = Liabilities + Capital.
- Entrepreneurship Development – Entrepreneurship is starting a new business by spotting a need, putting resources together and taking the risk. India needs entrepreneurs for jobs, new ideas and balanced growth. The process runs from knowing yourself to launching and growing. Start-up India (2016) supports new firms, funding comes from savings, angels, venture capital, banks and crowdfunding, and intellectual property rights protect new ideas, brands and creative work.
2. B. The Entrepreneurial Mindset
B1 The Entrepreneurial Mindset · B2 Designing an Entrepreneurial Idea · B3 Refining an Entrepreneurial Idea · B4 Pitching an Entrepreneurial Idea

3. C. Business Communications
C1 Developing and Organizing Ideas · C2 Creating Business Texts · C3 Publishing and Presenting
- Media Literacy – Media literacy is the skill of reading, questioning and creating media: news, ads, videos, posts, films and games. Every media text is made by someone, for a purpose, for an audience, using forms, conventions and techniques that shape how we feel. A media-literate person checks the source, evidence, other coverage and the original before believing or sharing, notices bias and filter bubbles, and makes their own media responsibly.
