Netherlands VWO 5 Music (arts music and music)
Chapters: 2
1. Analysing and interpreting
Melody and variation · Dances and instrumental forms · Texture and compositional techniques · Vocal genres and form · Interpreting musical experience
- Music Appreciation: How to Listen and Understand Music – Music appreciation means listening with attention, noticing what is happening in the music, and being able to talk about it. Every piece is built from a few elements: pitch and melody, rhythm and tempo, dynamics (loud and soft), timbre (tone colour), texture (how many layers) and form (the plan of the piece). Knowing these words helps you compare music from any culture, from a symphony to a raga to a film song, and explain why you like it.
- Musical Form: How a Piece of Music Is Planned – Form is the plan of a piece of music. Music is built from phrases (musical sentences) that end with cadences. Letters name the parts: same letter = same music. Binary is AB, ternary is ABA, rondo is ABACA, theme and variations is A A1 A2 A3. Sonata form has exposition, development and recapitulation. Songs use strophic, through-composed and verse-chorus forms. Dances and vocal genres each have their own typical forms.
- Music Composition: How to Build a Piece from a Tiny Idea – Composing means building music from small ideas. Start with a motif (a few notes). Develop it by repetition, sequence (the same shape higher or lower), and variation (change rhythm, turn it upside down). Put harmony under it: chords like I, IV, V, I, ending with a cadence. Choose a texture (tune alone, tune with chords, or many tunes together). Shape the whole piece with a form like A B A or verse-chorus. Improvising is composing on the spot. A brief tells you the purpose, length and instruments; you plan, draft, test and refine.
2. Music practice (part 2)
Improvising and composing · Orientation on study and careers
- Improvisation: Creating in the Moment, in Music and Drama – Improvisation means creating music or drama on the spot, without a script or written notes. It is not random: you work inside a frame, such as given circumstances in drama or a chord loop and scale in music. Key skills are listening, accepting offers ('Yes, and…'), using a small idea (motif) and answering it, and taking safe risks. Good improvisations can be recorded, refined and turned into a composed piece.
- Career Planning: From Knowing Yourself to Your First Job – Career planning has five steps. 1) Know yourself: interests, skills and values. 2) Explore career families and find out the work, study needed, pay and demand. 3) Plan a pathway with SMART goals and a plan B. 4) Search for jobs with a CV, cover letter, digital portfolio and interview practice. 5) Make the move from school to work and keep learning, because careers change over a lifetime.
