Learning Agriculture with Information: Plan, Do, Record, Review

We learn farming best by doing it and by using information. The learning loop is Plan, Do, Record, Review. A farm diary holds the dates, measurements and notes. Reviewing the records against the plan shows what worked and what to change next time. Good records also help to share and compare results.

🎬 Step-by-step story

  1. A pot stands on the school farm. We will grow a plant here and learn from it.
  2. The learning loop has four stations: Plan, Do, Record, Review. A student moves round them.
  3. Do: sow the seed, water it, look after it. The plant grows week after week.
  4. Record: each week we measure the height and write it in the farm diary. Bars appear for each week.
  5. Review: compare the diary with the plan. What was slow? What was good? Then go back to Plan and improve.
  6. Free play: slide the week from 0 to 8 and watch the plant and the diary together.

Tip: drag the 3D scene to turn it. Use two fingers to zoom.

🤔 Common doubts, cleared

Why do we need a plan before sowing?

A plan gives something to compare with. Without it you cannot say whether the result is good or bad.

What happens in the Do step?

We sow, water and protect the plant as planned. The plant grows in the 3D.

Why write numbers each week?

Weekly numbers show the growth speed and the sudden slow-downs. Each bar in the diary is one week.

What do we do with the records in Review?

Compare them with the plan, find reasons and choose one change. Then the student walks back to Plan.

How are records useful after the season?

They let you work out profit, compare seasons and share results. Slide the weeks and see the diary fill.

Why learn agriculture with information

Agriculture is a practical subject. We learn by growing, but memory is not enough. When we write down what we did and what happened, we can compare, find causes and teach others. Information turns experience into learning.

Information we use: weather, soil test, seed details, dates, amounts of water and fertiliser, plant measurements, cost and income.

The learning loop: Plan, Do, Record, Review

  1. Plan: choose the crop, the plot, the dates, what to measure and what you expect.
  2. Do: sow, water, weed, protect. Follow the plan and note any change.
  3. Record: write dates and measurements in a farm diary, with units.
  4. Review: compare results with the plan, find causes, and decide what to change.

Then the loop starts again with a better plan.

Keeping a farm diary

A good diary has one line per visit.

DateWork doneMeasureNote
5 JuneSowingSeed 20 gSoil damp
12 JuneWater 2 LHeight 3 cmFirst leaves

Rules: write on the same day, use the same units, record what is bad as well as what is good, and take a photo if you can. A computer spreadsheet helps to add up and draw charts.

Using the records to improve

After the season, add up costs and income, find the average growth per week, and draw a chart. Ask: did we follow the plan? Which change helped? Share the results with classmates and local farmers. Keep the diary for the next batch, so you do not start from zero.

Try it: grow a bean

Soak 3 beans overnight. Plant them in a cup with soil. Water a little each day. Every 2 days measure the stem and write it in a small table. After 14 days draw bars. Which two days grew the most?

Key formulas and definitions

Worked examples

1. Plant height in cm at weeks 1 to 4: 3, 7, 12, 18. Find the growth in week 4.

Week 4 growth = 18 - 12 = 6 cm.

2. Using the heights 0, 3, 7, 12, 18 cm at weeks 0 to 4, find the average growth per week.

Total growth = 18 - 0 = 18 cm in 4 weeks. Average = 18 / 4 = 4.5 cm per week.

3. A school plot cost Rs 800 (seed, compost, water) and gave vegetables worth Rs 1,250. Find the profit.

Profit = 1250 - 800 = Rs 450.

4. The plan said 30 cm by week 5. The diary shows 25 cm. At the Review step, what should you do?

Find the cause using the diary (water, light, pests). Then decide a change, such as more sun or more compost, and write it in the next plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is a farm diary?

It is a notebook or sheet where we write dates, work done, measurements and notes about a crop or animal.

Why is record keeping important in farming?

Records let us compare seasons, find the cause of problems, work out profit and teach others.

What is the learning loop in agriculture?

Plan, Do, Record, Review. After reviewing we make a better plan and begin again.
