Hardware and software
Hardware is every physical part: sensors, mobile phones, computers, printers, GPS units, cameras and drones.
Software is the set of instructions that makes hardware useful: a weather app, a spreadsheet, a farm-record program, a drone-control app.
| Hardware | Software |
|---|---|
| Can be touched | Cannot be touched |
| Soil moisture sensor | Irrigation app |
| Computer | Spreadsheet |
Hardware is like the body; software is like the mind that gives it orders. Without software, hardware does nothing.
Role of information in each field of agriculture
- Crop growing: weather, soil and pest data tell when to sow, water and spray.
- Livestock: milk amount, weight and health records; ear tags and feed programs.
- Horticulture and greenhouse: sensors for temperature, humidity and light control fans and curtains.
- Processing: quality, weight and date records keep food safe.
- Marketing: price and demand data tell where to sell.
- Farm management: cost and income records show profit.
Information media and data
Data are facts: numbers, words, pictures or sounds. Data can be numbers (rainfall 12 mm), text (pest name), images (leaf photo) and location (GPS point).
Media are the ways we store, carry or show information: paper, memory card, internet, radio, TV, SMS, video and chart. Each medium has strong and weak points. SMS reaches a basic phone; a video is easy to follow but needs more data.
Good data is correct, recent and recorded with a date and a unit.
Try it: sort your phone
Open your phone (or a drawing of one). List 4 hardware parts (screen, camera, battery, speaker) and 4 software items (calculator, weather app, camera app, maps). Then write one piece of data your phone makes each day and one medium it uses to show it.
Key formulas and definitions
- Information tool = hardware + software
- Data (facts) + media (way to show) = message
- Hardware: touch it. Software: use it.
- Good data: correct, recent, with date and unit
Worked examples
1. A greenhouse fan turns on when the temperature sensor reads above 30 degrees. Name the hardware, software and data.
Hardware: temperature sensor and fan. Software: the control program that compares the reading with 30. Data: the temperature reading.
2. Sort into hardware or software: drone, spreadsheet, GPS receiver, weather app.
Hardware: drone, GPS receiver. Software: spreadsheet, weather app.
3. Which medium suits a farmer with a basic phone: SMS or a long video? Why?
SMS. It works on a basic phone with weak network and uses very little data. A video needs a smartphone and fast internet.
4. A cowshed records milk daily: 18 L, 20 L, 19 L, 21 L. Find the mean milk per day.
(18 + 20 + 19 + 21) / 4 = 78 / 4 = 19.5 L per day.
Common mistakes
- Calling an app hardware. An app is software; you cannot touch it.
- Thinking data and media are the same. Data is the fact; media is how it is carried or shown.
- Believing more devices always means a better farm. Use the tool that answers your question.
- Writing data without a unit or date, so it cannot be used later.
