Core ideas of Ayurveda
Ayurveda = ayu (life) + veda (knowledge). It grew in ancient India. Important texts are the Charaka Samhita (medicine) and the Sushruta Samhita (surgery, including early plastic surgery of the nose).
Its two aims:
- Keep a healthy person healthy (prevention).
- Help a sick person get well (treatment).
It has eight branches, such as internal medicine, surgery, children's health and rejuvenation.
Five elements and three doshas
Ayurveda says all matter is made of five elements (pancha mahabhuta): space, air, fire, water and earth. In the body they combine into three functional forces called doshas:
- Vata (space + air): movement, breathing, nerves.
- Pitta (fire + water): digestion, heat, sharpness.
- Kapha (water + earth): structure, strength, moisture.
Each person has their own natural mix (prakriti). Health means the doshas are in balance, digestion (agni) is good, and the mind is calm. These are traditional ideas, not the same as modern biology terms.
Daily routine (dinacharya)
- Wake up early, before sunrise if possible.
- Clean teeth and tongue, wash, drink water.
- Exercise or yoga, to your capacity.
- Eat the main meal at midday, when digestion is strongest; a lighter dinner, early.
- Calm activities in the evening; sleep at a fixed time.
The three supports of life (trayopastambha) are food (ahara), sleep (nidra) and balanced conduct (brahmacharya, meaning self-control).
Seasonal routine (ritucharya), health and well-being
Ayurveda follows the six Indian seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn, early winter and late winter. Food and habits change with each: light food in spring, cool drinks and rest in summer, clean boiled water in the monsoon, warm and filling food in winter.
Well-being here means body, mind and senses are all happy. Many tips (regular sleep, exercise, fresh food, not overeating) agree with modern science.
Be careful: herbal medicines can have side effects or be contaminated. Use them only with a qualified practitioner. For serious illness, see a doctor. In India, Ayurveda is regulated under the Ministry of AYUSH.
Key formulas and definitions
- Ayurveda = ayu (life) + veda (knowledge)
- Five elements: space, air, fire, water, earth
- Vata = space + air; Pitta = fire + water; Kapha = water + earth
- Health = balanced doshas + good digestion + calm mind
- Three supports: food, sleep, balanced conduct
Worked examples
1. Which dosha is linked with digestion and heat? Which two elements make it?
Pitta. It is made of fire and water.
2. Why does Ayurveda suggest the main meal at midday?
It says digestion (agni) is strongest around midday, so food is digested best then. A light, early dinner helps sleep.
3. It is the monsoon. Give two Ayurveda-style tips.
Drink clean, boiled water (germs spread in rainy season) and eat light, freshly cooked food.
Common mistakes
- Thinking doshas are body parts or germs. They are traditional ideas for functions of the body.
- Thinking "natural" always means safe. Herbs can harm or mix badly with other medicines.
- Stopping a doctor's treatment for home remedies in serious illness.
- Thinking Ayurveda is only about medicines. Most of it is about daily habits and prevention.
