My Dance Space: Personal Space, Levels and Directions

Every dancer has a personal space, an invisible bubble as far as the hands and feet can reach. The floor is shared space for everybody. A dancer can move at low, middle or high levels and in directions such as forward, backward and sideways. Good use of space makes dance clear, safe and interesting.

🎬 Step-by-step story

  1. This is a dancer's dance space. The dancer stands in one spot on the floor.
  2. Personal space is an invisible bubble around the dancer, as far as hands and feet can reach. Use the slider to change its size.
  3. Shared space: the floor belongs to everyone. One dancer's bubble should not crash into another.
  4. Levels: low, middle and high. Use the button to change the dancer's level.
  5. Directions: forward, backward and sideways. The dancer moves toward the arrow.
  6. Your turn. Change bubble, level and direction to make your own dance path.

Tip: drag the 3D scene to turn it. Use two fingers to zoom.

🤔 Common doubts, cleared

Can I move my arms outside my bubble?

Your bubble is as far as you can reach, so a reaching arm stretches the bubble. Check that no one else is inside it.

Why can't dancers crash into each other?

It can hurt and it breaks the pattern. Keep bubbles apart in shared space.

Is low level only for sad dances?

No. Low level can show anything: a creeping cat, a seed, or a rolling ball. Each level can carry any mood.

Is dancing backward safe?

Yes, if you look over your shoulder first and keep the path clear.

How do I plan a path?

Choose a direction, a level and a start point for each move, then link them like dots.

Personal and shared space

Personal space is the bubble around you. Stretch your arms and legs in every direction without moving your feet: the space you reach is your personal space. It travels with you when you move.

Shared space (general space) is the whole room or stage where all dancers move. Rules for sharing:

Levels and directions

Levels

Level means how high or low the body is from the floor.

Directions

Direction is where the body travels or faces: forward, backward, left, right and also diagonal. Changing direction makes a path, and a path makes a pattern, like a zig-zag or a circle.

Mix levels and directions: go forward low, then turn and rise high. This gives your dance variety and tells a story.

Key formulas and definitions

Worked examples

1. Four dancers are on a small floor. How can they avoid bumping?

Each keeps their arms inside their own personal space, looks around before moving, spreads out to fill empty parts of the floor and slows down or stops near others.

2. Plan a 3-move path using different levels.

Move 1: crawl forward at low level. Move 2: stand and turn right at middle level. Move 3: jump on tiptoe with arms up at high level. Three levels, two directions.

3. A dancer wants to show 'sadness turning to joy'. How can levels help?

Start low, curled on the floor to show sadness. Slowly rise through middle level and finish at a high level with arms wide to show joy.
