Movement and breath
Breath is the first movement of life. When you breathe in, your chest and ribs open and you naturally lift or open the arms. When you breathe out, the body softens and sinks.
Dancers use this on purpose. A move that rises with an in-breath looks easy and alive. A move forced against the breath looks stiff.
Tip: breathe through the nose, slowly, and let the arms follow like a wave.
Growth stages in dance
Dance can tell the story of a life or a plant. Use three clear stages:
- Seed: low level, curled body, small and still.
- Sprout: rising slowly, one arm or one leg reaching up.
- Bloom: tall, arms wide, open chest, big and bright.
Notice that the stages change height (low to high), size (small to big) and speed (slow to lively).
Creating a short phrase
A dance phrase is a short string of moves, like a sentence. Make one in four steps:
- Pick 3 or 4 poses (for example seed, sprout, bloom, rest).
- Put them in order: beginning, middle, end.
- Link them with smooth moves and breath.
- Practise it 3 times, then show it to a friend.
You may change the speed, level and direction to make the phrase your own. Read about the four dance elements in the lesson Dance.
Try it
At home: stand still. Breathe in for 4 counts and raise your arms. Breathe out for 4 counts and lower them. Then crouch like a seed and grow slowly to a bloom over 8 counts.
In the 3D: in the last step, move the slider and watch the body change shape. Which number feels like the sprout?
Key formulas and definitions
- Breath in = rise and open; breath out = sink and close
- Growth stages: seed (low, curled) → sprout (rising) → bloom (tall, open)
- Phrase = beginning + middle + end (3 or 4 poses)
Worked examples
1. You want to show a flower opening. Which breath and arm move fit together?
Breathe in while the arms rise and open. The in-breath and the rising arms match, so the move looks natural.
2. Put these in order for a growth dance: bloom, seed, rest, sprout.
Seed, sprout, bloom, rest.
3. A phrase has 4 poses and each pose takes 8 counts. How many counts is the phrase?
4 × 8 = 32 counts.
4. You change the same phrase from 8 counts per pose to 2 counts per pose. How many counts now, and how does the feeling change?
4 × 2 = 8 counts. The feeling becomes quicker and more excited.
Common mistakes
- Holding the breath while dancing. Breathe all the time.
- Skipping the seed stage and standing tall at once, so no growth is shown.
- Making every pose the same size and speed, so the story is flat.
- Thinking dance needs fancy steps. Simple poses that tell a story are enough.
