Networked Drone Show

A drone show is many small drones flying a drawing in the sky. A program gives each drone a list of positions (x, y, height) over time. A network lets a controller send the same start signal to all drones, so they move together. If a drone loses its link, it stops or lands safely.

🎬 Step-by-step story

  1. Twelve drones sit on the ground. Each has its own number, like a roll number.
  2. Each drone is given a place as numbers: x (side), y (forward) and height. These numbers are coordinates.
  3. The program lists a first shape: a straight line. Every drone gets a new place on the line.
  4. Next shape: a ring. The program only changes the numbers. The drones move to the new places.
  5. The controller sends one "go" signal through the network to all drones at once. That keeps them in step. Now they make a star.
  6. Free play: pick a shape. Cut one link and see the red drone stop while the others continue.

Tip: drag the 3D scene to turn it. Use two fingers to zoom.

🤔 Common doubts, cleared

What are x and y?

They tell how far sideways and how far forward. With height they give the full place.

How does the shape change from line to ring?

Only the numbers change. The same drones go to new places.

Why one "go" signal?

So all drones start at the same moment and the shape does not break.

What is the red drone?

A drone that lost its link. It stops while others continue.

Programming formations

A formation is a shape the drones make together. To draw it, we give every drone a coordinate: how far sideways (x), how far forwards (y) and how high (height). A shape is just a list of coordinates, one per drone.

A program has a list of shapes and the time for each one: line for 5 seconds, ring for 5 seconds, star for 5 seconds. A loop can place 12 drones in a ring with a few lines, because each drone sits at an equal angle of 360° ÷ 12 = 30° from the next.

Network coordination

The drones talk to a controller (a ground computer) over a radio network. The controller does three jobs:

If one drone loses the link, a safe rule is built in: hover or land, so it never hits another drone.

Safety and testing

Test first on a screen (a simulation). Keep drones a safe distance apart. Fly only where the rules and the owner allow it, and keep people away from the flying area.

Try it: be a human drone show,Try it: इंसानी ड्रोन शो बनाएँ,<p>With 8 friends in a playground, give each a number card. A "controller" calls the shape (line, ring) and says "go" once. Everyone walks to the place on the shape at the same time. Predict first: will a ring need bigger steps than a line? Then try it. Key formulas and definitions

Worked examples

1. 12 drones form a ring. What angle is between neighbours?

360° ÷ 12 = 30°.

2. A show has line (5 s), ring (8 s), star (7 s). How long is the show?

5 + 8 + 7 = 20 seconds.

3. Why does the controller send ONE start signal instead of starting drones one by one?

Starting one by one would make them move at different times and the shape would break. One signal makes them move together.

Common mistakes

Practice quiz

1. What is a coordinate?
2. What does the controller send to start all drones together?
3. How do we change the shape from line to ring?
4. What should a drone do if it loses the link?
5. The angle between 10 drones in a ring is:

Frequently asked questions

How can hundreds of drones fly without crashing?

Each follows its own safe path from the plan, keeps a distance from others, and reports its position to the controller all the time.

Do the drones see each other?

Mostly they know their own position (for example from satellite positioning) and follow the plan. The controller watches all of them.

Is it hard to program?

A simple show is a list of places and times. Block coding or Python can do it on a screen first.
