1. What is a media service?
A medium carries a message: text, picture, sound or video. A media service is an online service built around media. It collects media, keeps it safe, and gives it to people who ask.
Common kinds
- Video and music streaming: films, songs, lessons.
- News and information: news sites, apps, weather and traffic updates.
- Social media: people share photos, short videos and messages.
- Search: finds media from many places.
- Online shopping and learning: pictures and videos help us choose or learn.
2. Functions: what a media service does
Behind the screen the service does six jobs.
- Collect: creators upload content.
- Store: files are kept on servers, often in many places so they arrive fast.
- Organise: titles, tags and categories so we can search.
- Deliver: send content when a user asks (a request and a response). Video is sent in small pieces (streaming), so playing can start before the whole file arrives. If the internet is slow, the player waits: this is buffering.
- Recommend: the service records what a user watches or likes and suggests similar things.
- Earn: from ads, subscriptions or sales, so it can pay for servers and creators.
A service also needs an account so it can remember each user, and rules about what may be posted.
3. Using media services
Choose the right service for the need
- To learn: a lesson or encyclopedia service.
- To stay informed: a trusted news service.
- To keep in touch: a messaging or social service.
- For fun: a music or video service, with time limits.
Use it well
- Privacy: share little personal information. Check the privacy settings.
- Cost and data: free services may show ads; lower video quality uses less mobile data.
- Trust: before sharing news, check who made it and whether another source says the same.
- Respect others and the law: do not post private photos of other people; do not copy music or videos without permission.
- Balance: set a time limit. Sleep and play matter too.
Recommendations are helpful but they can show you only what you already like. Look for new things on purpose.
Try it
At home: pick one media service you use. Write its Creator, Service and User. Then write one thing it recommends, one way it earns money and one privacy setting you can change.
In the 3D: press each kind (Video, Music, News, Shopping) and watch the ball colour change. Then raise the users and watch the server load.
Key formulas and definitions
- Chain: Creator → Service → User
- Service jobs: collect, store, organise, deliver, recommend, earn
- Streaming = content sent in small pieces and played while arriving
- Server load goes up when more users ask at the same time
Worked examples
1. A user taps a song. List what happens in order.
1) The phone sends a request. 2) The service finds the song on a server. 3) It sends the song in small pieces. 4) The phone plays it while more pieces arrive.
2. A video app shows many cooking videos to a user who watched one. Which service function is this?
Recommend. The service remembered what the user watched and suggested similar content.
3. Ten users each pay 100 rupees a month for a service. How much is the monthly income, and how much with 40 users?
10 × 100 = 1,000 rupees. 40 × 100 = 4,000 rupees. More users means more income.
Common mistakes
- Thinking media is only TV. Text, pictures, sound and video on any service are media.
- Believing a free service costs nothing. You may pay with ads, data or attention.
- Sharing news only because many people shared it. Check the source first.
- Using the same password on every service. Use a different one for each.
