Operating System

An operating system (OS) is the main system software that sits between the user and the hardware and manages all resources. Its functions: process management (sharing the CPU between programs), memory management (giving and taking back RAM), file management, device management (through drivers) and security (passwords, permissions). Users talk to the OS through a user interface: command line (CLI), graphical (GUI), touch, voice or gesture. Examples: Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, iOS.

🎬 Step-by-step story

  1. The operating system sits between you and the hardware. You ask, the OS gets the hardware to do it.
  2. Many apps want the CPU. The OS gives each app a short turn, again and again.
  3. The OS gives each app its own part of RAM. When the app closes, the OS takes that part back.
  4. The OS also looks after files and folders, runs devices, and keeps the computer safe with passwords.
  5. You talk to the OS through a user interface: typing commands, clicking icons, touching or speaking.
  6. Your turn: tap an interface type and see how it works.

Tip: drag the 3D scene to turn it. Use two fingers to zoom.

🤔 Common doubts, cleared

Can a computer work without an OS?

Not in a useful way. Without an OS nobody manages the CPU, memory, files or devices, so you cannot run your apps.

Do all my apps really run at the same moment?

On one CPU core, no. The OS switches very fast between them. Watch the green arrow jump from app to app.

Why does my phone get slow with too many apps open?

Each open app takes a part of RAM. When RAM is full, the OS has to keep moving things in and out, which is slow.

Is Android a GUI or a touch UI?

Android shows a graphical screen and you work it by touch, so it is a touch-based interface with a graphical display.

What is an operating system?

An operating system is system software that manages the computer's hardware and software and acts as a bridge between the user and the hardware. It is the first program loaded when the computer starts (booting). Examples: Windows, Linux (Ubuntu), macOS, Android, iOS.

Functions of an operating system

User interface

The user interface (UI) is the way the user and the OS talk to each other.

Board exam focus

Expect: list and explain any three functions of an OS (3 marks), difference between CLI and GUI, name the interface used by a smartphone.

Key formulas and definitions

Worked examples

1. You play music, download a file and type a document at the same time. Which OS function makes this possible?

Process management. The OS gives each process short turns on the CPU so they all move forward together (multitasking). Memory management also gives each its own RAM.

2. Give two differences between CLI and GUI.

CLI: commands are typed, harder for beginners, uses less memory. GUI: icons and menus are clicked, easy to learn, needs more memory and graphics.

3. A game crashes but the browser still works. Which OS function protected the browser?

Memory management: each program has its own memory area, so one program's crash does not spoil another's memory.

4. Which UI is used by a smart speaker? By a phone?

Smart speaker: voice-based UI. Phone: mainly touch-based, with voice as an extra.
