Travelling Around: Travel Plans and the Present Continuous for the Future

Use am/is/are + verb-ing with a future time word for plans that are already arranged: We are leaving on Friday. For fixed public timetables use the present simple. For predictions use will. A trip plan names the destination, day, transport, ticket and luggage.

🎬 Step-by-step story

  1. A trip starts with a plan. A road joins Home and Hill town.
  2. A plan has a ticket, a bag and a day. Our day is Friday.
  3. The present continuous shows what is happening now. The train is moving.
  4. The same form also shows a sure plan for later: "We are leaving on Friday." The train waits at home.
  5. We can travel in different ways. Taller bar means faster: walk, train, plane.
  6. Now you play. Slide the day. On Today the train moves. On other days it waits.

Tip: drag the 3D scene to turn it. Use two fingers to zoom.

🤔 Common doubts, cleared

How can the same form mean now and the future?

The time word decides. Compare the moving train in step 2 with the waiting train in step 3.

Does the plan have to be booked?

It has to be arranged: tickets, a meeting or a time that people know. A vague wish uses "going to" or "would like to".

Why not just use will?

Will is for predictions and quick decisions. A fixed plan sounds more natural with the present continuous.

Which way of travel is quickest?

The plane. In step 4 the tallest bar is the plane, then the train, then walking.

What if the day is today?

Then the action is happening now. Slide to Today in free play: the train moves.

Travel words and travel plans

A trip plan answers: Where (destination)? When (day, departure time)? How (train, bus, plane, bike)? With whom? What to take (luggage, ticket, ID, water)?

Useful words: journey, trip, itinerary (plan of places and times), platform, departure, arrival, book a ticket, pack a bag, sightseeing.

Planning steps: choose the place and day, compare ways to go, book the ticket, pack the bag, tell someone at home. Safe travel means keeping your ticket and ID with you and following the staff.

Present continuous for the future

Form: am/is/are + verb-ing + future time word. We are leaving on Friday. I am meeting Ravi at six. She is flying to Delhi tomorrow.

When to use it: for a personal arrangement that is already made: tickets bought, people told, a time fixed. The future time word (tomorrow, on Friday, next week, tonight) tells us it is the future.

Questions and negatives: What time are you leaving? Are they coming with us? I am not going to the hills this year.

Present continuous, present simple, going to and will

Present continuous: a personal arrangement. "I am visiting my uncle on Sunday."

Present simple: a fixed public timetable. "The train leaves at 7:30 tomorrow."

Going to: an intention or a plan, even if nothing is booked. "I am going to learn the guitar this year."

Will: a prediction or a quick decision. "It will rain tomorrow." "I will carry that bag for you."

Tip: with arrange / book / fix think present continuous. With timetable think present simple.

Talking about the way you travel

You can compare ways to travel: walking is slow but free; a train is fast and cheap for long trips; a plane is fastest but costs more and uses more fuel. Say: "I prefer travelling by train because it is comfortable." Questions to ask a friend: Where are you going? How are you getting there? Who are you travelling with? When are you coming back?
