What are angiosperms?
Angiosperms are flowering plants. Their name means "seed in a case". The flower makes the seeds, and the fruit wraps around them. Most plants we see around us are angiosperms: trees like mango, crops like wheat, vegetables, grasses and garden flowers.
They live almost everywhere on land. They can be tiny herbs or big trees. They are the biggest group of plants.
Two groups: dicots and monocots
A cotyledon is a seed leaf. It is the first part inside a seed. It holds food for the baby plant. Angiosperms are split by how many cotyledons they have.
- Dicot = 2 cotyledons (di = two).
- Monocot = 1 cotyledon (mono = one).
Then many other body parts follow this split too.
Compare seed, root, leaf and flower
| Part | Dicot | Monocot |
|---|---|---|
| Seed leaves | 2 | 1 |
| Root | Taproot (one main root with branches) | Fibrous (many thin roots from the stem base) |
| Leaf veins | Reticulate (net) | Parallel |
| Flower | Petals in 4s or 5s | Petals in 3s |
| Examples | Bean, pea, gram, mango, rose | Wheat, rice, maize, grass, onion |
Some things like the inside of the stem are different too, but the four above are enough to tell them apart.
Try it: find them at home
Soak a bean (or chana) and a maize grain overnight. Next day peel the bean: it splits into 2 halves. Try to split the maize: it does not, because it has one cotyledon. Now look at a leaf from a mango or rose and one from grass or a banana plant. Hold them to the light and look at the veins. Predict first, then check: which has a net, which has parallel lines?
Key formulas and definitions
- Angiosperms = flowering plants, seeds inside fruit
- Dicot: 2 cotyledons, taproot, net veins, petals in 4s/5s
- Monocot: 1 cotyledon, fibrous roots, parallel veins, petals in 3s
- Cotyledon = seed leaf that stores food for the baby plant
Worked examples
1. A plant has fibrous roots and leaves with parallel veins. Is it a dicot or monocot?
Monocot. Both fibrous roots and parallel veins are monocot clues.
2. A seed splits into two equal halves. Which group is the plant in?
Dicot. Two halves are the two cotyledons.
3. A flower has 6 petals. Which group is it likely in?
Monocot. 6 is a multiple of 3, and monocot petals come in 3s or multiples of 3.
Common mistakes
- Thinking petal number always decides: use all four clues together.
- Mixing the roots: taproot is dicot, fibrous is monocot.
- Thinking all trees are dicots. Palm and bamboo are monocots.
- Forgetting that wheat and rice are monocots, not dicots.
