Chapters: 4
1. Education and personality development
Upbringing and personality development
- Nature of Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behaviour – Psychology is the science that studies mental processes (like thinking and remembering), experiences (our private feelings) and behaviour (what we do). Mental processes cannot be seen, so psychologists infer them from behaviour. Behaviour can be overt (seen from outside) or covert (hidden inside, like a racing heart). Psychology is a discipline with its own methods and theories. It is a natural science because it uses experiments and studies the brain and body, and a social science because it studies people in families, groups and culture. Mind and brain are linked but not the same. Many popular beliefs about psychology, like "psychologists read minds", are not true.
2. Inclusion and integration as shared tasks
Inclusion and integration in groups
- Culture and Socialisation: How We Learn to Live Together – Culture is the whole way of life that a group learns and shares: its ideas, rules and things. It is learned, not born with us. Culture has three sides: cognitive (what we know and believe), normative (rules for how to behave) and material (tools and objects). Socialisation is the lifelong process by which a baby becomes a member of society by learning this culture. It happens through agencies: family, peer group, school, mass media, and others like work, religion and community.
3. Reflective leisure and media use
Leisure time and media use
- Media Literacy – Media literacy is the skill of reading, questioning and creating media: news, ads, videos, posts, films and games. Every media text is made by someone, for a purpose, for an audience, using forms, conventions and techniques that shape how we feel. A media-literate person checks the source, evidence, other coverage and the original before believing or sharing, notices bias and filter bubbles, and makes their own media responsibly.
4. Valuing nature and responsible consumption
Protecting nature and responsible consumption
- Environment and Sustainable Development – The environment gives us resources, soaks up our waste, supports life and gives beauty. When we take resources faster than nature renews them, or throw waste faster than it can absorb, we cross its carrying capacity and face an environmental crisis. India faces land degradation, air and water pollution, forest and biodiversity loss. Burning fossil fuels traps heat and causes global warming; CFCs thin the ozone layer. Sustainable development meets today's needs without harming the ability of future generations to meet theirs, using clean energy, less waste and traditional knowledge.
