Passing on information between media and languages
- Mediation: How to Pass On Meaning Between Languages, Media and People – Mediation means helping two sides understand each other. In language learning, the mediator passes on information from one language or medium into another – not word for word, but the key points the listener needs, in words they understand. You select what matters, change the language, adapt the style to the listener and sometimes turn a chart or picture into words. In school mediation, a neutral student or teacher helps two people in a conflict talk, listen and find their own fair solution.
9. Culture and intercultural awareness
Countries, cultures and intercultural sensitivity
- Intercultural Competence – Intercultural competence is the ability to understand, respect and communicate well with people whose culture is different from yours. Culture is like an iceberg: food, clothes and festivals are visible, but values, ideas about time and rules of politeness are hidden. Misunderstandings come from the hidden part. Good intercultural skills are: knowing about other cultures, keeping an open and curious attitude, and practising skills like careful listening, asking questions and holding back quick judgement. Learning a foreign language is one of the best bridges.
