What is a home project?
A home project is a small piece of real work that you do in your own home and about your own family life. It is not only a paper exercise. You change something real, and you measure what changed.
Good home projects are small and safe. They can be about food, clothes, the house, time, money or care of family members. Examples: cut water waste, make a study corner, plan a week of healthy meals, make a chore chart, or teach a grandparent to use a phone.
The aim is to practise problem solving: see a need, make a plan, act, and learn from the result.
The five steps of a home project
- Find a problem or need. Ask your family. Pick one thing that you can really change in a few weeks.
- Plan. Write the goal (what you want), the jobs (what you will do), the time (how long) and the cost (money and things needed). Ask an adult to check that it is safe.
- Do. Follow the plan. Keep a log: a short note each day with the date, what you did and what you saw. Take photos if your family agrees.
- Check. Compare before and after. Use numbers where you can. Ask: did the goal come true? What went wrong?
- Share. Write a short report and show it to your family and your club. Say what you learned and what you will do next.
The steps make a loop. What you learn in step 5 often starts a new project.
Measuring before and after
A project is only a story until you measure it. Pick one number that shows the problem. Count it before, do the project, then count it after.
- Dripping tap: drops per minute.
- Messy cupboard: minutes to find a thing.
- Food waste: grams thrown away each day.
Change = before โ after. Percent change = change รท before ร 100. If drops fall from 30 to 4 per minute, the change is 26 and the percent change is 26 รท 30 ร 100, about 87%.
If the number did not improve, that is still a result. Write why, and try a better plan.
The school home-economics club
A school home-economics club is a group of students who do home-life activities together, with a teacher as guide. It is a place to share projects and learn from others.
What a club does
- Runs group activities: a healthy-snack day, a mending corner, a clothes swap, a waste-saving week.
- Helps members with their home projects: ideas, feedback, safety checks.
- Serves the community: cooking tips for the school, a visit to an old-age home, a safety talk.
- Keeps simple records: members, plans, money spent, and results.
Roles in a club
Typical roles are a president, a secretary who writes the minutes, a treasurer who keeps the money record, and members. Everyone takes turns, and decisions are made by talking and voting.
Many countries have such clubs. Students may also meet other schools in club events or exhibitions.
Writing the project report
A short report has these parts: title, problem (why I chose it), plan (goal, jobs, time, cost), what I did (from the log), result (before, after, a small table or bar chart), what I learned, and thanks to helpers. Use simple words and be honest about mistakes.
Try it: pick one tiny problem at home today. Write the goal in one line, count your "before" number, and plan three jobs. You have started a home project.
Key formulas and definitions
- Home project loop: Find โ Plan โ Do โ Check โ Share
- Plan = goal + jobs + time + cost
- Change = before โ after
- Percent change = (before โ after) รท before ร 100
- Total effort = time per day ร number of days
Worked examples
1. A student's plan says: 15 minutes a day for 7 days. How much total time will the project need?
Total time = 15 ร 7 = 105 minutes. That is 1 hour 45 minutes.
2. In a tap project, the tap dripped 30 drops a minute before the fix and 4 drops a minute after. Find the change and the percent change.
Change = 30 โ 4 = 26 drops a minute. Percent change = 26 รท 30 ร 100 โ 86.7%, so about 87% less dripping.
3. A tap drips 30 drops a minute. One drop is about 0.05 mL. How much water is lost in one hour?
Drops in one hour = 30 ร 60 = 1,800. Water = 1,800 ร 0.05 mL = 90 mL.
4. A family threw away 400 g of food a day. After the project it was 80 g a day. How much food is saved in 30 days?
Saved per day = 400 โ 80 = 320 g. In 30 days = 320 ร 30 = 9,600 g = 9.6 kg.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a project that is too big, like "fix all water problems in my city". Pick one small thing you can finish.
- Skipping the plan and starting at once. Without a plan you cannot tell later if you reached your goal.
- Not measuring "before". Without it, "after" has nothing to compare with.
- Treating the club as only a fun group. A club also plans, keeps records and serves others.
