What is map work in Class 12 Geography?
In the board exam you get an outline map of India. You must locate and label a few places from a list given by CBSE, usually 5 marks (1 mark each). The places come from the India: People and Economy book.
Only the official outline map is used. We do not draw state or country borders ourselves. We only mark places (a mine, a port, a city) with a symbol and a name.
How to mark a place
- Use a clear symbol: ▲ for a mine, ■ for an industry, ● or ⚓ for a port, ✈ for an airport.
- Write the name next to the symbol, neatly, in capital or clear letters.
- Use a pencil first; then ink if allowed. Add a small key if you use many symbols.
- Find the place with a clue: which coast, which river, which plateau, near which big city.
People and agriculture on the map
Population is dense on the flat, fertile northern plains and along the coasts. It is thin in the dry west (Thar desert), the high Himalaya and thick forests of the north-east.
Crop areas to know
- Rice: wet eastern and coastal plains, the lower Ganga plain, the Brahmaputra valley.
- Wheat: north-west plains (Punjab–Haryana–western Uttar Pradesh region).
- Cotton: black soil of the Deccan (Maharashtra, Gujarat).
- Tea: Assam hills and Darjeeling; coffee: hills of Karnataka.
- Sugarcane: Uttar Pradesh plains and Maharashtra.
Minerals and energy on the map
Iron ore mines
Mayurbhanj (Odisha), Bailadila (Chhattisgarh), Kudremukh and Ballari (Karnataka). They lie on the old Peninsular plateau.
Coal and lignite
Jharia and Bokaro (Jharkhand), Raniganj (West Bengal), Talcher (Odisha), Korba (Chhattisgarh), Singareni (Telangana), Neyveli lignite (Tamil Nadu). Most coal is in the Damodar, Mahanadi and Godavari valleys.
Oil fields and refineries
Oil fields: Digboi (Assam, the oldest), Mumbai High (offshore, in the sea), Ankaleshwar (Gujarat). Refineries: Digboi, Barauni, Mathura, Panipat, Jamnagar, Kochi, Visakhapatnam and others.
Industries, ports and airports on the map
Iron and steel plants
Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur, Visakhapatnam, Salem, Vijayanagar. They sit near iron ore and coal because these raw materials are heavy.
Cotton textiles and software
Cotton mills: Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore. Software technology hubs: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Noida.
Major sea ports
West coast: Kandla (Deendayal), Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), Marmagao, New Mangalore, Kochi. East coast: Tuticorin (V.O. Chidambaranar), Chennai, Ennore, Visakhapatnam, Paradip, Haldia–Kolkata.
International airports
Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Amritsar, Ahmedabad and others.
Exam tips for map questions
- Read the question: does it ask you to identify a marked place or to locate it yourself?
- Learn places in groups (all ports from north to south along each coast).
- Use rivers and coasts as clues: Haldia is on the Hugli, Paradip is on the Mahanadi delta.
- Practise on a blank map at least three times before the exam.
- Always check the latest CBSE map list, because it can change each year.
Key formulas and definitions
- Key: ▲ mine · ■ industry · ● / ⚓ port · ✈ airport
- Steel plant rule: near iron ore + coal + water + transport
- Ports: west coast Kandla → Kochi; east coast Tuticorin → Haldia
- Oil: Digboi (oldest), Mumbai High (offshore), Ankaleshwar
Worked examples
1. Locate Bailadila on the outline map.
Find the Chhattisgarh region on the plateau, south-east of the centre of the Peninsula, near the Indravati river basin. Mark ▲ and write BAILADILA (iron ore).
2. Which port would you mark at the head of the Gulf of Kachchh?
Kandla (Deendayal Port). It is a tidal port built to serve north-west India. Mark ⚓ on the gulf's inner end and write KANDLA.
3. Why are Jamshedpur and Bokaro close to each other on the map?
Both are in the Chota Nagpur plateau, rich in coal (Jharia, Bokaro) and near iron ore (Singhbhum, Mayurbhanj). Heavy raw materials travel a short way, so steel plants cluster here.
4. A marked spot is in the Arabian Sea west of Mumbai. What oil field is it?
Mumbai High, an offshore oil field about 160 km from the Mumbai coast.
Common mistakes
- Marking a place without writing its name. Always write the name next to the symbol.
- Putting a sea port inland. Ports must touch the coast or a river mouth.
- Mixing up Kandla (Gulf of Kachchh) and Kochi (Kerala coast). Say the coast first: west-north vs west-south.
- Drawing or shading borders yourself. Mark only the asked place on the given outline map.
