What is fashion? Youth fashion
Fashion is the style of clothes, shoes and accessories that many people like at a certain time. It keeps changing, season after season.
Youth fashion is the style popular with young people. It is often comfortable (loose or stretchy), colourful, sporty, and worn in layers such as a T-shirt with a jacket. Young people often copy styles from friends, films and sports stars. A good rule: follow a trend only if it is comfortable, affordable and suits you.
Clothes, colour and the right outfit
An outfit is top + bottom + shoes (+ accessories). To match colours, pair one bright colour with a calm one such as navy, black or grey. For school choose clean, simple and comfortable clothes. For sports choose light, stretchy cloth. For a function choose clean clothes with a little style. Always check size and comfort.
Make-up and hairstyle
A hairstyle should be clean, easy to keep and suit the face and the occasion: short, long and tied, or a bun. Long hair is tied for sports and lab work.
Make-up means colours applied on the face. For young people, natural and very light is best. Skin care comes first: wash the face, keep skin clean and use only skin-safe products. Never share make-up or use heavy products on young skin. Be careful with a patch test and ask a parent or elder.
Image and image design
Image is the picture people form of you. It comes from your clothes, hair, face, posture and behaviour: how you stand, speak and treat others. Image design is thinking about these on purpose so that the picture is neat, confident and honest to you.
A good image is not about being rich or copying a star. Clean clothes, a pleasant manner and respect make the best image. Be yourself and dress for the occasion.
Try it: design an outfit and an image
Draw a person for one occasion: school, sports or a function. 1) Pick a top, bottom and shoes with colours that match. 2) Choose a simple hairstyle. 3) Add posture: draw them standing straight. 4) Write three words you want others to feel, for example neat, friendly, active.
Key formulas and definitions
- Outfit = top + bottom + shoes (+ accessories)
- Match: one bright colour + one calm colour
- Image = clothes + hair + face + posture + behaviour
- Choose by occasion: school, sports, function
Worked examples
1. Choose an outfit for a school picnic that includes a long walk.
A light cotton T-shirt, comfortable trousers or track pants, and sports shoes. Tie long hair. This is comfortable and safe for walking.
2. A red top and a khaki bottom clash a little. How can you fix it?
Change to a darker bottom like navy or black, or change the top to a softer colour. One bright colour with one calm colour works best.
3. Name four parts that make a person's image.
Clothes, hair, face (skin care), posture, and behaviour (any four).
4. Why should young people use only very light make-up, if any?
Young skin is delicate. Heavy products can harm it. Skin care and a clean face look best at your age.
Common mistakes
- Following a trend even when it is uncomfortable or does not suit the occasion.
- Thinking image is only clothes. Posture and behaviour are part of it.
- Using heavy or shared make-up on young skin.
- Copying a famous person instead of choosing what suits you.
