Sex Determination in Humans

Human body cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes: 22 pairs of autosomes and 1 pair of sex chromosomes. Women are XX and men are XY. Every egg carries X; half the sperm carry X and half carry Y. X + X gives a girl, X + Y gives a boy, so the chance is 50:50 and the father's sperm decides.

🎬 Step-by-step story

  1. Every cell in your body has 46 chromosomes, arranged as 23 pairs. One chromosome of each pair came from your mother, the other from your father.
  2. 22 pairs look the same in men and women (autosomes). The last pair is different: sex chromosomes. A woman has XX. A man has XY, where Y is short.
  3. Eggs and sperm carry only one chromosome from each pair. So every egg carries X. Half the sperm carry X and half carry Y.
  4. If a sperm with X fertilises the egg, the baby is XX: a girl.
  5. If a sperm with Y fertilises the egg, the baby is XY: a boy. So the father's sperm decides the sex, not the mother.
  6. Your turn: press Fertilise many times and count girls and boys. The tally goes close to 50:50.

Tip: drag the 3D scene to turn it. Use two fingers to zoom.

🤔 Common doubts, cleared

Why 23 pairs and not 46 single chromosomes?

Each pair has one copy from mother and one from father. The 3D shows them side by side.

Is the Y chromosome just a broken X?

No. Y is a separate, smaller chromosome with its own genes, including one that starts male development.

Why does the egg never carry Y?

The mother is XX, so she has no Y to give. Every egg gets one X.

Why is it 50:50?

The father makes X-sperm and Y-sperm in equal numbers. Press Fertilise many times and the tally moves close to half and half.

Does the father 'choose'?

No. He supplies both kinds of sperm; which one reaches the egg is pure chance.

Chromosomes: autosomes and sex chromosomes

Chromosomes are thread-like structures in the nucleus made of DNA and protein. Humans have 46 in each body cell, in 23 pairs. Of these, 22 pairs are autosomes (the same in males and females) and 1 pair is the sex chromosomes.

Females have two matching sex chromosomes: XX. Males have one X and one smaller Y: XY. The Y carries a gene that makes the baby develop as a male.

How is sex determined in human beings?

When gametes form, each gets only one chromosome from every pair (23 in all).

Sperm XSperm Y
Egg XXX girlXY boy

So the chance of a girl or a boy is 1 : 1 (50% each) in every pregnancy, and the sex depends on which sperm fertilises the egg, i.e. it is decided by the father's contribution, by chance.

Sex determination in other animals

Not every animal uses sex chromosomes. In some reptiles, the temperature at which eggs are kept decides the sex of the young: for several turtles, warmer nests give more females, while in some lizards and crocodiles the pattern is different. Some snails can even change sex during their life. So sex determination is genetic in humans but can depend on the environment in other species.

Key formulas and definitions

Worked examples

1. How many chromosomes does a human sperm carry?

A gamete has one chromosome from each pair: 23 (22 autosomes + X or Y).

2. A couple has three daughters. What is the chance that their fourth child is a son?

Each pregnancy is independent. The sperm is X or Y with equal chance, so the chance is still 1/2 (50%). Earlier children do not change it.

3. Show with a cross why the ratio of boys to girls is 1:1.

Mother XX gives eggs X, X. Father XY gives sperm X, Y. Combinations: XX, XY, XX, XY → 2 girls : 2 boys = 1 : 1.

4. Why can't the mother decide the sex of the child?

All her eggs carry X. Only the father makes two kinds of sperm (X and Y), so the sex depends on which sperm fertilises the egg.

Frequently asked questions

Who decides the sex of a baby, the mother or the father?

The father's sperm: it can carry X (girl) or Y (boy). The mother always gives X. It happens by chance, so no one is to blame.

How many chromosomes are in human sperm and egg?

23 each: 22 autosomes plus one sex chromosome (X in eggs; X or Y in sperm).
