- Making Inferences: Reading and Listening Between the Lines – An inference is a smart guess based on clues in a text plus what you already know. Good readers and listeners infer people's feelings and mood, a speaker's or writer's intent and purpose, their tone and attitude, the meaning of new words from context, and information the text leaves out.
