South 고등학교 2학년 Understanding Education
Chapters: 4
1. Meaning of education
Humans as educable beings · Old and new ideas of education · Lifelong learning
- Philosophy of Education: What Education Is and What It Is For – Philosophy of education asks big questions: what is education, why do we learn, and what kind of person should school help us become? Humans are educable: we are born able to learn almost everything. Education is wider than schooling, and schooling is wider than training. Old ideas saw the child as an empty jug to fill; newer ideas see the child as an active learner who learns by doing. Schools aim both to socialise us into society and to help each of us realise our own potential, and at its best education sets people free to think and act for themselves.
- Lifelong Learning: Learning at Every Age – Lifelong learning means continuing to learn throughout life, not only at school. It includes formal learning (school, college), non-formal learning (organised courses outside school) and informal learning (everyday experience). Because jobs and technology change fast, people need to update skills to adapt and build a sustainable career. After school there are many pathways — academic, vocational, apprenticeship, work plus study — and qualifications can be stacked over time. A learning society gives everyone chances to learn, and each person can make a simple learning plan.
2. Educational activity
Views of learning · Learner differences
- Learning Theories: How Learning Happens – Learning is a lasting change in what you know or can do. Behaviourism says we learn from rewards and repeats. The cognitive view says we link new ideas to old ones. The social-constructivist view says we build knowledge with help from others. Motivation, sleep, stress and feedback can all raise or lower learning.
3. Education systems
History of school systems · Education and social integration · Issues in Korean education
- Education Systems – An education system is the organised way a society teaches its young. Schools appeared when trade, factories and nations needed many people to read, count and share rules. Schooling spread from a few families to public, free and compulsory schools arranged in levels. Education helps social integration and mobility, but problems remain: unequal access, exam pressure, costly coaching and uneven quality. Reforms try to fix these.
4. Future education
Education for future society · Digital and AI in education
- Future of Education – The world changes fast: machines and AI change jobs, and new risks like false news and climate shocks appear. So education must teach skills that last (thinking, learning how to learn, teamwork, safe use of technology, health and kindness) and must continue for life.
- Technology and AI in Education – Education technology (edtech) means using digital tools to teach and learn: videos, apps, online classes and AI tutors. An adaptive AI tutor makes questions harder after right answers and easier after wrong ones. Technology can personalise learning and give teachers data, but it has limits: the digital divide, screen time, privacy and the need for real teachers.
