- Making Inferences: Reading and Listening Between the Lines – An inference is a smart guess based on clues in a text plus what you already know. Good readers and listeners infer people's feelings and mood, a speaker's or writer's intent and purpose, their tone and attitude, the meaning of new words from context, and information the text leaves out. Every inference must be supported by evidence.
- Adaptation: How a Story Moves from a Book to a Film, Play or Game – An adaptation is a new work made from an older one in a different medium, such as a novel turned into a film, a play, a comic, a series or a game. Each medium has its own tools and limits, so the adapter must cut, merge, change and sometimes add. Adaptations can be faithful, loose or free (transposed to a new time or place). To compare a book and its adaptation, look at what changed, why it changed, and what new meaning it creates.
- Intercultural Competence – Intercultural competence is the ability to understand, respect and communicate well with people whose culture is different from yours. Culture is like an iceberg: food, clothes and festivals are visible, but values, ideas about time and rules of politeness are hidden. Misunderstandings come from the hidden part. Good intercultural skills are: knowing about other cultures, keeping an open and curious attitude, and practising skills like careful listening, asking questions and holding back quick judgement. Learning a foreign language is one of the best bridges.
