1. Becoming parents
My own growth · Mature love and intimacy · Choosing a partner · Marriage and family today · Pregnancy and birth · Sustaining the couple relationship
- Human Development Throughout the Lifespan – Human development is how people change from before birth to old age. Change happens in three areas: body (physical), thinking (cognitive) and feelings and relationships (social-emotional). Theories help us explain it: Piaget for thinking, Kohlberg for right and wrong, Erikson for the self, and Bowlby and Ainsworth for attachment. The brain is plastic: used connections grow strong and unused ones are pruned, so early care and stimulation matter a lot. Some things put development at risk (poverty, neglect, violence, toxins before birth); others protect it (a caring adult, good school, healthy community, fair policies). When supports outweigh risks, a person shows resilience: they do well despite hard times.
- Family Ethics: Living Well Together as a Family – A family is a group of people who live with, care for and depend on each other. Families come in many shapes: nuclear, joint, single-parent, blended, couples, grandparent-led. Family ethics means the fair and kind ways members treat each other: equal respect, shared work, honest talk, and care for children and elders. A healthy couple relationship rests on free choice, trust and equality. Every family meets problems; good talk, fair sharing and outside help get it through.
- Sexual Health: Growing Up Safe and Informed – Sexual health means physical, emotional and social well-being related to sexuality, not just the absence of disease. Puberty (about 8–14 years, different for everyone) is driven by hormones and brings body and feeling changes. Sexuality is part of life from childhood to old age and includes identity, feelings, relationships and values. A healthy body image means accepting that real bodies differ and media images are often edited. Consent must be free, clear, informed and can be withdrawn; everyone has rights to information, safety, privacy and health care. STIs spread through sexual contact and some body fluids; many have no signs; prevention includes abstinence, condoms, vaccines (HPV, hepatitis B), testing and early treatment. Get information from reliable sources and trusted adults.
2. Child development and care
Stereotypes of parents · Parenting styles · Principles of development · Theories of child development · Newborns and infants · Early and middle childhood · Balancing child and parent needs · Safe care environments · Supporting healthy growth
- Parenting Styles and Parenthood – Parenting is how adults care for, guide and teach a child. Two things matter most: warmth (love and listening) and rules (clear limits). Warm parents with fair rules are called authoritative, and their children usually do best. Becoming a parent changes life, and parents must also look after themselves.
- Child Development: Stages, Milestones and Care – Growth is a child getting bigger. Development is a child getting more skilled: in body, thinking, language and feelings. It happens in an order, through stages (infant, toddler, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence), with milestones that most children reach at about the same age. Good nutrition, play, love, safety and responsive adults help every area grow.
