Japan 高校2年 Crafts II
Chapters: 3
1. Expression
Crafts for daily life · Crafts for society
- Traditional Crafts – A traditional craft is a way of making useful and beautiful things by hand, using local materials and skills passed from one generation to the next. Pottery shapes and fires clay, weaving interlaces warp and weft threads, paper-cutting uses folds to make symmetric patterns, and woodwork joins wood with cut joints. The craft spirit means patience, precision, respect for materials and pride in careful work.
- Crafts for Society: Useful, Beautiful and Kind to the Earth – A craft is made by hand for real people. A good craft does three jobs: it works well (function), it is pleasing to see and touch (beauty), and it does little harm to the Earth (environment). Crafts also give work to makers, tie communities together and keep local skills alive.
2. Appreciation
Appreciation of crafts and craft culture
- Appreciating Crafts and Craft Culture – To appreciate a craft is to notice its beauty and skill and to understand its story. Look (shape, colour, pattern), touch (material and finish), ask (use and maker) and place it (the tradition it belongs to). Craft cultures grow from local materials and needs, and are passed from one generation to the next.
3. Common items
Material, form and colour in crafts
- Material, Form and Colour in Crafts – Every craft is shaped by three choices. Material decides the texture, weight and feel. Form (shape) decides how it stands, holds and looks. Colour decides the mood. A good maker picks all three to suit the job and the user.
