1. Maps and GIS
Maps and GIS in today's world
- Introduction to Maps – A map is a small, flat drawing of all or part of the Earth, seen from above and drawn to a scale. Every map needs a title, scale, direction (north arrow), legend with symbols, and a grid based on a projection. Maps are grouped by scale (large or small) and by what they show (physical or cultural).
2. International understanding and cooperation
Diversity of ways of life and international understanding · Global issues and international cooperation
- Global Issues and International Cooperation – Global issues are problems that cross borders and affect everyone: climate change and pollution, shrinking resources and energy, poverty and hunger, and a growing population needing food and housing. No single country can fix them alone. Nations cooperate through agreements (such as the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Agreement), aid, shared technology and the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. People can also help by saving energy, wasting less and choosing fair products.
3. Sustainable communities
Natural environment and disaster prevention · Local-area survey and future of the community
- Natural Hazards – A natural hazard is a natural event that can harm people and property, such as an earthquake, volcano, landslide, flood, drought or cyclone. It becomes a disaster when it hits people who are not ready. Geological hazards come from inside the Earth; meteorological (weather) hazards come from the air and water. Risk = hazard × vulnerability ÷ capacity to cope, so warning systems, strong buildings and trained people cut the damage.
