Italy Secondaria di secondo grado – classe 5ª (esame di Stato) Drawing and art history
Chapters: 2
1. Art history: Post-Impressionism to today
Modern art and architecture
- Modern Art and Modernism – Between about 1880 and 1945, artists stopped copying reality and asked what art itself could do. Colour and brushwork showed feeling (Post-Impressionism, Expressionism); objects were seen from many sides (Cubism); speed and machines were celebrated (Futurism); art became pure shape and colour (abstraction, De Stijl, Constructivism); chance and dreams came in (Dada, Surrealism); and design followed function (Bauhaus, the Modern Movement). The same break happened in music, theatre and dance, and modernism spread worldwide through exchange, including India.
2. Drawing
Survey and design
- Architectural Survey: Studying a Building – An architectural survey is a careful study of an existing building. We look at its context (road, neighbours, landscape), its materials and structural system (how the load goes to the ground), we measure it with tape, laser or scanner, and we record it in plans, elevations and sections. Surveys help us repair heritage, learn from old and new buildings, and design something that fits its place.
