Italy Secondaria di secondo grado – classe 3ª Architecture design + architecture workshop
Chapters: 2
1. Architectural design
Drawing and composing architecture · Analysing architecture
- Architectural Design – Architectural design turns a need into a building. It starts with a brief (what people need, the site, the money), then sketches, plans, elevations and sections, then 3D models and CAD. The designer uses a module (a repeating measure), symmetry and proportion, checks that the structure can carry the loads, plans for sun and shadow, and thinks about the environment and people.
- Architectural Survey: Studying a Building – An architectural survey is a careful study of an existing building. We look at its context (road, neighbours, landscape), its materials and structural system (how the load goes to the ground), we measure it with tape, laser or scanner, and we record it in plans, elevations and sections. Surveys help us repair heritage, learn from old and new buildings, and design something that fits its place.
2. Architecture workshop
Models and survey
- Architectural Model Making – A scale model is a small copy of a building in which every length is divided by the same number. At scale 1:100, 30 m becomes 30 cm. Architects build models in card, foam, wood or by 3D printing to test ideas, show clients and check structure. We choose the scale, collect measures (survey), cut and glue in layers, and test with prototypes. Tools can be manual, mechanical or digital.
