- मध्यस्थता: भाषाओं, माध्यमों और लोगों के बीच अर्थ कैसे पहुँचाएँ – मध्यस्थता का मतलब है दो पक्षों को एक-दूसरे को समझने में मदद करना। भाषा सीखने में मध्यस्थ एक भाषा या माध्यम की जानकारी दूसरी में पहुँचाता है — शब्द-दर-शब्द नहीं, बल्कि वे मुख्य बातें जो सुनने वाले को चाहिए, उन शब्दों में जो वह समझे। तुम ज़रूरी बातें चुनते हो, भाषा बदलते हो, सुनने वाले के हिसाब से शैली बदलते हो, और कभी-कभी चार्ट या तस्वीर को शब्दों में बताते हो। स्कूल मध्यस्थता में एक तटस्थ छात्र या शिक्षक झगड़े वाले दो लोगों को बात करने, सुनने और अपना निष्पक्ष हल ढूँढने में मदद करता है।

- अंतर-सांस्कृतिक दक्षता – अंतर-सांस्कृतिक दक्षता (intercultural competence) का मतलब है दूसरी संस्कृति के लोगों को समझना, उनका आदर करना और उनसे अच्छी तरह बात कर पाना। संस्कृति एक हिमशैल (iceberg) जैसी है: खाना, कपड़े, त्योहार ऊपर दिखते हैं, पर मूल्य, समय की सोच और विनम्रता के नियम नीचे छिपे रहते हैं। ग़लतफ़हमियाँ इसी छिपे हिस्से से आती हैं। इसके लिए तीन चीज़ें चाहिए: ज्ञान, खुला और जिज्ञासु रवैया, और सुनने-पूछने और जल्दी फ़ैसला न करने का कौशल। विदेशी भाषा सीखना सबसे अच्छा पुल है।
