Chapters: 4
1. English — 1re themes
Imagination: utopia, dystopia, the fantastic · Encounters: love, friendship, otherness
- Intercultural Competence – Intercultural competence is the ability to understand, respect and communicate well with people whose culture is different from yours. Culture is like an iceberg: food, clothes and festivals are visible, but values, ideas about time and rules of politeness are hidden. Misunderstandings come from the hidden part. Good intercultural skills are: knowing about other cultures, keeping an open and curious attitude, and practising skills like careful listening, asking questions and holding back quick judgement. Learning a foreign language is one of the best bridges.
2. German — 1re themes
Imaginaries: folk tales, the uncanny, the fantastic · Representations of memory
- History and Memory: How We Remember the Past – Memory is how people and groups remember the past; history is the careful study of the past using evidence. After an event, witnesses keep living memory for a few generations. Sources such as documents, photos, objects and interviews survive longer. Societies turn memory into memorials, museums, street names and remembrance days. Different groups may remember the same event differently, so historians compare sources to test memory, correct myths and give a fair account. Remembering past wrongs can support justice and reconciliation.
