- Carnatic Music: Its Story, Texts and Great Musicians – Carnatic music is the classical music of South India. Its ideas grew from old texts (Natya Shastra, Brihaddeshi, Sangita Ratnakara). After about the 13th century Indian art music grew into two streams, Hindustani and Carnatic. Purandara Dasa set up graded lessons; Ramamatya, Somanatha and Venkatamakhi organised ragas into parent scales, ending in the 72 melakartas. The Trinity (Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Syama Sastri) and others like Swati Tirunal composed the core repertoire; printed notation and great performers carried it into the modern concert.
- Taal: The Rhythm Cycle of Hindustani Music – A taal is a fixed cycle of beats (matras) split into groups (vibhags). The cycle starts on sam, strong groups are marked by a clap (tali) and a lighter group by a wave (khali). Its basic drum pattern is the theka.
- Musical Instruments – Every musical instrument makes something vibrate: a string, a column of air, a stretched skin, a solid body or an electronic circuit and speaker. We group instruments by what vibrates: strings (chordophones), wind (aerophones), drums with skins (membranophones), solid percussion (idiophones) and electronic (electrophones). Smaller, shorter or tighter vibrating parts give higher notes. Each instrument has its own timbre (tone colour) because it adds its own mix of harmonics. In an orchestra or band, instruments are combined to make rich colours.
2. Practical
Playing
- Music Performance: Playing Solo and in an Ensemble – Performing music means playing or singing a piece for listeners. A good performance is accurate (right notes, right rhythm), keeps a steady tempo, uses dynamics and phrasing to show feeling, and fits the style of the music. In an ensemble, players also listen to each other, balance their volume and follow cues. Good preparation is slow, careful practice in small chunks, then speeding up and performing for others.
