- The Indian Epics: Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Puranas – Sanskrit has two great epics, called itihasa ('so it happened'): the Ramayana, credited to Valmiki, with 7 kandas and about 24 000 verses, and the Mahabharata, credited to Vyasa, with 18 parvas and about 100 000 verses, which contains the Bhagavad Gita. The Puranas ('old tales') are 18 Mahapuranas and many Upapuranas; a classic Purana has five marks: creation, re-creation, lineages, the ages of Manus and the history of dynasties. These texts were first passed on orally, then written in manuscripts, and retold in many Indian and Asian languages and art forms. They teach dharma (right duty), and are sources for language, values, art and the study of the past.
